The oldest true American history was begun near James Bay by Bishop Eric Gnuppson, who came to Canada from Greenland in 1121.

Bishop Gnuppson developed a method to help the Norwegian people in Canada remember Bible verses.  Such as:

Genesis 1:16 “And God made the two great lights; the greater light to rule the day, and the lessor light to rule the night: he made the stars also.”

Bishop Gnuppson made pictographs, which were carved on wood small, slender, wood slabs.  The pictographs were accompanied by short oral memory poems.

The fifth pictograph of the Maalan Aarum (“engraved years”) is shown here.

In 1585, Thomas Hariot, who came on the second English voyage to Roanoke , NC , learned that the Lenape had: “…one chief god that hath been from all eternitie that hath … made …the Sunne, Moone and Starres … “  (Smith, 1628:21)

In 1821 in Indiana , Moravian priests, who had a copy of the pictographs, also made English translations of the oral poem spoken by a Lenape. Their translation for pictograph five was: “He made the sun, the moon, the stars.”

Conclusion; A pictograph with a poem can retain memory for 700 years or more.
