Ancient Copper Workshop Discovered at Cahokia
Free Article, please copy and paste into your document and print out or save to file.

Archaeologists excavating at Mound 34 at the Mississippian site of Cahokia have found the only known copper workshop of the Mississippian era. They have been seeking the workshop for 8 years. The copper pieces produced here were for religious ritual. The site had actually been found 60 years ago and then lost. Refined techniques had to be used to identify it by using an electron microscope on flat pieces of copper to find the pieces had been repeatedly heated and cooled. The technique used by the Cahokians is difficult to reproduce today. The raw copper source may be in the upper Great Lakes.
